Anchored by the new Midland City Center, Centennial Park transforms two central blocks in downtown Midland into a vibrant cultural outdoor destination that will become the city’s primary public civic space. Inspired by the gridded land patterns of West Texas and utilizing native and adapted plants appropriate for the harsh climate, the park provides a green heart for the city, with shade for strolling and relaxing under, while contributing an ample gathering place for the Midland community.

Sustainable design solutions such as vegetated swales, harvested stormwater and AC condensate from the convention center for re-use in irrigation, and sub-surface soil cells to promote healthy tree growth are central to the park and will be used to educate visitors about green approaches to water use, an extremely precious resource in Midland’s arid climate.

Flanked by promenades and Mexican sycamore allées, the four-acre park will be host to Midland’s annual July 4th celebration, outdoor markets, art events, and holiday displays. Sloping up to a mesa and amphitheater style seating at the west end of the park, a central great lawn acts as a flexible space for games, picnicking, and informal seating for performances at the new stage pavilion. An interactive water feature adjacent to a new concessions pavilion functions as a splash pad and plaza during the day and a choreographed, lit fountain at night highlighting the entrance to the new convention center. Other elements, including a dog park, grove seating, game tables, and a nature-style playground will provide active destinations for all Midlanders to enjoy.
